Brisbane stadium build narrows to two: Major work coming in 2027

The race to build Brisbane's new $7.1B Olympic stadium infrastructure package has officially come down to two heavyweight joint ventures, and for South East Queensland's plant operators, civil contractors and equipment suppliers, this is the kind of pipeline you want to be positioned for early.

Who's in the running

After a five-month assessment process by the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority (GIICA), two joint ventures have made the shortlist:

• Built and Sacyr:  Australian Tier 1 contractor Built paired with Madrid-based infrastructure giant Sacyr, combining established Queensland presence and local supply chain knowledge with serious international stadium experience.
• John Holland and BESIX Watpac:  a powerhouse Queensland pairing with a combined résumé that includes Suncorp Stadium, the Gabba, Queensland Country Bank Stadium, Marvel Stadium and the MCG's Great Southern Stand.

Both teams are now working through an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) phase, with the successful bidder to be announced later this year. GIICA takes possession of the Victoria Park site on 1 June for early works, with main construction kicking off in 2027. 

Why this matters for the trade

A 63,000-seat stadium doesn't get built by the head contractor alone. Hundreds of subcontractors, hire companies, owner-operators and suppliers feed into every stage of the program to make it a success. We're talking:

• Earthworks and bulk excavation: site prep on a venue this size means significant cut and fill, haulage, compaction and stabilisation work

• Fit-out and finishing: interior trades, glazing, mechanical, electrical and the long tail of specialist work that takes a structure to completion

And that's before you factor in the legacy use. Once the 2032 opening ceremony wraps, this venue becomes the new home ground for the Brisbane Lions, Brisbane Heat and Queensland Bulls — meaning ongoing maintenance, upgrades and operational works for years to come.

The window to position yourself is now

Major projects don't wait until the shovels are in the ground to lock in their supply chains.
