Steel fixing contractors work alongside engineers and interpret building plans. Steel fixers are also responsible for marking out site areas and use both hand and power tools. In some cases, steel fixers can also combine steel with clips, wire or welding. This strengthens the formwork which creates firm and stable concrete structure. Some of their work also includes fixing steel to solid bases, as well as fixing steel beams.

If you want to become a qualified steel fixer, you will need to complete a steel fixing apprenticeship. You will also be required to have a good head for heights, enjoy practical and outdoor work, and maintain a good level of physical fitness and stamina.

In addition, the ability to understand building plans and specifications is a requirement, as steel fixers tend to work side-by-side with engineers. Steel fixers also need to wear protective clothing and safety equipment, especially for outdoor work in all weather conditions.

There are several benefits achieved in reinforcing concrete with steel. Steel fixers use a combination of steel bars and mesh to strengthen a structure, as steel bars, rods and mesh absorb the tensile, shear and compressive stress in the concrete structure.
