In Australia, Tipper Trucks are also known as ‘truck lorries’ or ‘dump trucks’. They’re used to transport a range of bulk and loose materials around worksites. They’re fitted with a large tray on the back of the truck that can be raised so that its contents fall out. Tipper trucks are found in a number of industries and are a staple amongst construction, mining and residential projects. They’re used to move materials like construction aggregate, dirt, sand, gravel, snow, asphalt, turf and more.
There are a wide range of Tipper Trucks available for hire in Australia. It’s important to understand what machine is right for your project before you dive into an agreement to ensure you have the most productive machine for the most cost-effective price.
For smaller residential works with materials less than 12 tonnes, you’ll only need a bogie drive Tipper Truck. The next largest option is a truck and dog Tipper Truck - these come in a large range of sizes and can be moved around site with ease. Beyond the truck and dog tippers are semi trailer tippers, which are usually around 19 metres long and have a bigger capacity than truck and dogs. These are great for large construction, quarry and mining projects.
The short answer is, no. In Australia, there is no such thing as a ‘Tipper Truck license’, so you aren’t required to have a license to operate a dump truck. However, it’s necessary to obtain an HR (heavy rigid) license if you’re operating a Tipper Truck on local roads. This heavy vehicle license will vary from state to state, and doesn’t allow you to operate a Tipper Truck in a mining environment.

Currently, the leading Tipper Truck brands include Volvo, Caterpillar, Kenworth, Hitachi and Isuzu. An argument could be made that Volvo are leading the pack in Australia, with most smaller Tipper Trucks in Australia being produced by the Swedish manufacturers.
