Piling Contractor FAQs

Here's some tips & frequently asked questions on how to find the right piling contractor for your job

1. What is piling?

Piling is a method of creating a strong foundation for buildings. This process includes driving piles of varying materials into soil for installation. Piling is an essential part of any construction as it determines the durability and strength of the structure.

The piling process involves the use of materials such as wood, steel, concrete, etc., to build a foundation. The quality and sturdiness of the material is an essential factor to consider, notably building stability.

2. How to find a reliable piling contractor?

You must consider a multitude of factors when choosing the best piling contractors for your project. One of the most significant aspects includes the type of foundation you need. If you need to conduct piling on the ground with poor soil conditions, you will require a deep foundation.

You can talk to various piling contractors about the techniques as well as materials that they use. Based on this, you can choose a potent professional. A reliable contractor must offer you the following benefits:

  • Budgeted pricing
  • Quality materials
  • Work Guaranteed with experience
  • Structure design and layout
  • Ground investigation
  • Structural calculations

3. What are the different types of piling?

Piling can be of various types based on the design of the pile foundation or the method of installation. Here are the five types of piling:

  • Driven Piling: In this method, the piles are hammered or driven into the land with vibration. Professionals commonly adopt this method for grounds with wet and contaminated soils. Driven piles are cast with the help of steel casings. Alternatively, off-site pre-cast piles can be formed with timber, concrete, wood, or other materials.
  • Sheet Piling: As you can guess from the name, these are sheet-like piles of steel. Sheet piles are used to build temporary walls on construction or other such sites. The driven piling method is adopted for installing these piles. It is a cost-effective option as the same sheets can be used for other locations as well.
  • Bored Piling: This method involves augering holes into the ground. Once the builders excavate the area, they can install the piles with concrete to fix them in position. It is suitable for lands with low water tables. Additionally, you can use this method in areas around existing buildings as it minimises the vibrations caused.
  • Screw Piling: In this method, screw-like steel piles are installed into the ground to form a sturdy and sustainable pile foundation. This is a cost-effective method that causes minimal destruction to the land.
  • Mini Piling: This method uses lightweight yet strong piles for creating a deep foundation. Mini or micro piles are small in diameter (5-12 inches) and suitable for multiple soil conditions.

4. Is piling expensive?

Piling costs vary among distinctive piling companies. Compared to column bases, the cost of piling that includes excavation may be higher. However, this criterion is mainly for multi-storeyed buildings.

Suppose the same thing is measured for individual houses or other small structures. In that case, pile foundation is cheaper than concrete footings because, in this scenario, the auguring is conducted using handheld equipment instead of machines.

Apart from that, piling is a reasonably cost-effective method if you are dealing with ground with a high water table. Therefore, you can determine piling costs based on the soil, which affects the method used.
