Bitumen Sealing FAQs

Here's some tips & frequently asked questions on how to find the right bitumen sealing company for your job

1. What is bitumen sealing?

Bitumen sealing is a road surface process commonly used in Australia. It's a pavement product that is flexible and used as surface treatment for driveways, roads, streets, highways, car parks, highways and even BMX tracks. It is formed first by spraying the surface with bitumen binder then covered with a layer of aggregate. However, a bitumen seal may sometimes contain a few more applications of binder and/or aggregate.

Resealing is part of pavement maintenance; however, it will depend on the condition of the surface. An evaluation must be conducted to determine whether the surface will be needing a new bitumen binder and/or aggregate. Another factor to consider is what functions of the original bitumen seal will be restored. Resealing provides a brand new and re-water proofed pavement.

2. How much does bitumen sealing cost?

Bitumen sealing costs an average of $0.14 to $0.25 per square foot. For a full sealing project, it may cost an average of $472, or between the range of $252 to $698. The price will also depend on the required materials for the whole job, from water hose to oil spot primer to mixing paddle. For seal coats, you may need to look for bitumen suppliers in your area.

While it is possible to do a seal on your own, it is still recommended to hire professionals to ensure high quality and long-lasting work. The standard rate of bitumen contractors costs an average of $35 per hour. For instance, if you have a 1,000 square foot area that requires a seal, the job will take about 32 hours, expect to spend a total of about $1,152. This means that labour cost for sealing is about $1.15 per square foot.

Here are a few other factors to consider for sealing costs:

  • Size of the area. The bigger the area, the higher the cost for bitumen seal and labour.
  • Shape of the surface. Sloped surfaces are more difficult to seal than flat and uniform surfaces. Therefore, it will require more time and effort to complete the job in addition to the labour cost.
  • Accessibility of the area. If the pavement that needs resealing is hard to access, it will take more time to finish the job, another addition to labour costs. These areas may include the backyard or other remote spaces on the property.
  • Number of coats. For residential driveways, sealing with one coat will be enough. Meanwhile, public parking lots or other areas that go through heavier traffic, 2-3 coats may be required.

3. How long does a seal coating last?

Seal coating may last up to three years. However, its longevity will depend on the maintenance and resealing that must be done annually.
