Traffic Barrier FAQs

Here's some tips & frequently asked questions on how to find the right traffic barrier supplier for your job

1. What are traffic barriers used for?

Traffic barriers are tools used to keep vehicles within the roadway and keep them safe from potentially dangerous situations, such as an ongoing construction near the highway. They are designed to protect road users, from pedestrians and drivers to workers on a construction site.

Below are four types of traffic barriers according to their functions:

  • Roadside Barriers - These are used to ensure traffic is protected from any roadside obstacles or hazards. These may include steep slopes, fixed objects such as bridge priers, and even bodies of water.

  • Median Barriers - This type of barrier prevents vehicles from crossing road medians and colliding with oncoming vehicles. They are designed to be stuck from either side. Median and Roadside barriers can actually be used together in the prevention of vehicles and hazards within the median from colliding.

  • Bridge Barriers - Placed on the bridge to help restrain vehicles from crashing off the side of the structure then falling onto the roadways, rivers or railroads below. It is designed higher than a roadside barrier because it not only stops vehicles from accelerating but also from falling over the bridge. They are usually made from reinforced concrete parapets and barriers or multi-rail tubular steel barriers.

  • Work Zone Barriers - These barriers are usually seen near work zones. Its main purpose is to protect all road users from the potential hazards of the work zones such as construction sites, road repairs and others. Work zone barriers come in two types: water-filled barrier and temporary concrete barrier. Water-filled barriers are steel-reinforced plastic boxes that are linked together, forming a longitudinal barrier then ballasted with water. These can be easily placed where needed because it will not need any heavy-lifting. However, it is not recommended for use during freezing weather.

2. What are the different types of road barriers?

Below are the different types of road barriers based on their stiffness:

  • Flexible Barriers - These barriers are usually made from wire rope that is supported between frangible posts. It is best used to minimise injuries to vehicle occupants but at the same time poses a risk to motorcycle drivers. Since this type of barrier deflects more effectively than other barrier types, it needs to be repaired immediately following the impact. This is to maintain their redirective capability.

  • Semi-Rigid Barriers - This type of barrier is made from steel beams or rails. These may deflect less than flexible barriers, but they can actually be located closer to the hazard, especially when space is limited. These may also be able to redirect secondary impacts, depending on the impact.

  • Rigid Barriers - These barriers are made of concrete, and unlike the previous barriers mentioned, these do not deflect. Therefore, rigid barriers must only be used when there is no room for deflection and both semi-rigid, and flexible barriers cannot be used. It requires little to no maintenance and can be used to provide a high level of containment of heavy vehicles. Plenty of these barriers will be seen when utilised on road worksites to ensure the protection of workers and other road users while another barrier type is under repair.
