Rock bolting is the process of securing or straightening closely jointed or damaged rocks. The process is commonly used in mine work and tunnels with the use of steel rods. Rock bolt reinforcement can also be used on any excavation sites. Rock bolts are easy to install, and the process is quite inexpensive.
Rock bolts are installed by drilling initial holes into the roof or walls of a rock formation. Steel rods are then inserted into these holes to provide support to the roof or rock walls. The installation begins with the rock bolter drilling holes into the rock followed by the preparation of the anchor head. The rock bolt is then threaded inside the anchor head until it engages with the bottom bail. The anchor is then inserted into the pre-drilled holes.
A nut is threaded on the rock bolt to protect it from damage, as the bolt is hammered about 1 inch below the surface of the rock. The bolt is then hand-tightened for initial anchor engagement on sidewalls of the hole. Once tightened, the nut is removed, and a reaction plate is placed over the rock bolt. Finally, washers and nuts are attached to secure the position of the thread.
There are different types of rock bolts that vary in sizes. The length of the rock bolts as well as their arrangement are also varied depending on the reinforcement requirements.
Rock bolting costs may vary depending on the length, size and type of materials used. The price can also change depending on the machinery being used, type of rock bolting required, as well as the project site location.
