How it works

A broken water pipe is an urgent problem that must be repaired immediately to prevent it from causing more damage. Although you can perform a simple patch here and there, it is always best to call for a professional. This is because fixing it yourself is just a temporary solution that may result in even more damage if not checked by a plumbing professional.

Pipe Repair FAQs

Here's some tips & frequently asked questions on how to find the right pipe repair for your job

1. What are the different types of pipe repair methods?

Below are different types of pipe repair methods that are recognised in the industry:

  • Replace as Cylinder
  • Removal by Grinding
  • Deposition of Weld Metal
  • Reinforcing Full Encirclement Sleeve (Type A)
  • Pressure-Containing Full Encirclement Sleeve (Type B)
  • Composite Sleeve
  • Mechanical Bolt-on Clamps
  • Hot Tap
  • Fittings

These are methods that use the best industry practices. However, there may be companies that will choose different methods not listed above. If they decide to use a different approach, they must provide details and calculated dimensions that are consistent with industry standards, codes, and best practices.

2. How long does it take to fix a broken pipe?

Fixing a broken pipe may take around a few hours to a few days. Although, on average, it will take about 4 hours. Here are the major factors that are considered to determine how long it takes to fix a broken pipe:

  • Size. The smaller the break, the less time spent to fix it. The bigger the break, the more time spent to fix it.
  • Location. The easier to locate pipes will take less time, while those underground or in other hard places to reach will take more time.
  • Amount of damage. The more damaged the pipe has sustained, the more time needed to fix it.
  • Environment. Indoor pipes will take less time than outdoor pipes, the same way that plumbing repairs in rural areas will also take less time than those in highly populated areas.
  • Age. The older the pipes, the more time spent in fixing it. However, older pipes are actually recommended for replacement than repair.

3. Can you patch a pipe?

While waiting for the plumber, you can patch your pipe to avoid further damage in your home. Below are the steps you may follow to successfully patch a leaking pipe:

  • Stop the flow of water. Shut off the water supply valve for the leaking pipe. If you are unsure which to turn off, you may turn off the main shutoff valve instead. Make sure to drain the remaining water from the pipe by turning on the closest faucet to the leak.
  • Clear out the nearby area. Wipe off the leaky pipe until dry. Take the time to clean off nearby cabinets, mop the floor and remove other items nearby to prevent them from further damages.
  • Prepare the pipe. Ensure that the leaky area has no rust, limescale or rough edges by smoothing it out with a piece of rough sandpaper. This makes your patch more effective, especially when you need to turn the pipe on before your plumber arrives.
  • Apply water pipe epoxy. A plumber's epoxy is the easiest way to patch the leak. Simply use an adequate amount of epoxy, work it in your hands until mixed and ready for application. Press it down and apply it. Ensure that the shape will cover the entire leak. Finally, smooth out the edges and give it time to settle.

4. How much does it cost to repair a pipe?

The average range cost for drain repair is between $200 to $1,000. However, the minimum cost is usually around $150 while the maximum at $2,000. The repair cost can also vary by the project:

  • $150 for small repairs that do not need replacement and are located in easy to access areas.
  • $500 for moderate repairs that include an installation of a new section of pipe.
  • $2,000 for repairs that are in difficult to access areas and will be needing new pipes.
