Major Oak Heritage Services are experienced in the planning, facilitating and conduct of ground penetrating radar (GPR) heritage surveys in both Aboriginal and historical contexts.

We carefully plan and tailor the project to meet the client’s needs; this includes budgets, timeframes, methods and the preparation of detailed professional reports. GPR is a technique used in geophysics to collect and record data about the earth’s subsurface.

This manner of collecting data allows the archaeologist to study and map underlying archaeological features otherwise impossible to distinguish using traditional archaeological methods. Essentially, we look for physical and chemical changes that are indicative of the presence or absence of subsurface features.

The GPR maps created from our surveys provide primary data that is used to direct the location of excavation sites or to identify areas containing sensitive cultural remains, such as burial sites, that would be better left untouched, and therefore the information can guide archaeologists to avoid disturbing these locations.

The most significant advantage of GPR methods is that they gather an immense amount of information about the near-surface in a completely non-invasive, non-destructive way, permitting large sites with concealed remains to be viewed and analysed efficiently yet accurately, while also protecting and preserving them.
