About

The IWS story all started with one truck and one man’s vision to succeed.

In 1961, Italian-born entrepreneur Mr Pasquale Borrelli made a life changing decision. He ventured to Australia, setting up a one-man, one-truck waste removal service in the western suburbs.

Nearly fifty years later, Mr Borrelli’s business has grown into the multi-million dollar venture we know today as Integrated Waste Services (IWS). Our renowned organisation now sets the benchmark for environmentally friendly and cost-effective recycling and waste management solutions in Australia.

Today IWS still reflects the hard working ethos of its humble beginnings with eldest son Joe the CEO, and his brother Nic in charge of Operations, Research and Development. Together with over fifty loyal and dedicated staff, they are committed to continuing their father’s vision for a more sustainable environment.

There is no other team in the industry more committed to caring for the environment than our team at IWS. We have a range of programs and structures in place to ensure this can be achieved.

Revegetation program

Our Northern Balefill in Dublin is home to a revegetation program, which ensures the surrounding area of the landfill facility is revegetated and free of vermin. As each landfill cell is filled and capped, seeds that are collected from local flora are germinated and planted along the accompanying buffer zones. The vegetation will blend into the environment and provide greater security for the local fauna.

Turning waste into energy

For over a decade, a landfill gas capture and energy production system has been successfully operating at our Wingfield facility. This system recovers methane from the decomposing residual waste in the landfill and returns it as electricity to the main grid.

A similar process is now being carried out at our Northern Balefill facility, where plans for an on-site power station that will convert methane to electricity are already underway. Due to its flat coastal location, this facility has also been noted as a potential wind farm and solar energy site.

We are currently exploring a range of options to help recover the energy value of the Northern Balefill’s remaining residual waste. It is anticipated that this will become more than just a landfill in the future; it will be a tri-energy production site.

Working towards the future

IWS is continually changing and growing to meet the future requirements of waste and recycling. Waste is no longer just an unlined hole in the ground. It has become a science that enables us to work towards a cleaner, greener future.

By working together with the community, industry and government, we can continue to provide the best possible solutions to effectively manage waste from a local, national and global perspective.

Adelaide’s most environmentally-responsible waste handling service.

At IWS we take environmental protection and occupational health and safety very seriously. We’re proud to hold the following industry recognised accreditations to support this.
