Boulder Retaining Wall FAQs

Here's some tips & frequently asked questions on how to find the right boulder retaining wall contractor for your job

1. What is a boulder retaining wall?

If you are looking for a retaining wall to prevent soil from flowing, boulder walls are the best option. Along with fulfilling the basic need of creating a strong platform, these walls add a beautiful, natural look.

Other materials that are used for retaining walls range from wood and cinder blocks to bricks and other retaining blocks. Boulder walls stand out among others as they can withstand soil erosion and stay intact despite the weather change.

You can use a boulder wall to create elevated beds, different levels in a yard and provide erosion control. Furthermore, you can use boulders to define attractive walk-out slopes and driveway entrances to make your house look majestic.

2. How do you install a boulder retaining wall?

Here is a step-by-step procedure for installing boulder walls:

  • Step 1: Decide a location for laying out the boulder wall.
  • Step 2: Dig the land where the wall will be constructed. Make sure to unearth the area up to 2 feet deeper than the required wall.
  • Step 3: Excavate the footing up to 2 feet in width and 8 inches deep. Level the base of this area with a line level.
  • Step 4: The bottom of the footing must not be loose. You can make it compact with a shovel or a plate tamper.
  • Step 5: Pour coarse gravel to fill the entire footing area. Make sure that you spread the gravel equally and use a shovel or plate tamper to make the filling compact.
  • Step 6: Level the footing with the help of a line level. Additionally, you can use a garden rake or plate tamper to smoothen the surface.
  • Step 7: Place a layer of boulder stones on top of the footing. Make sure that you position it so that the flatter side of the boulder faces upwards.
  • Step 8: Carefully place the other layers of the boulder, one by one. You need to ensure that the wall moves towards the bank as you install more layers. You can also rotate the longer stones so that they face backward.
  • Step 9: Cover the backside of the boulder stones with the soil-blocking fabric. You need to ensure that you also cover the dirt bank with this fabric sheet.
  • Step 10: Pour coarse stone or gravel in the area behind the wall. You need to fill up the entire area, stopping when there are only 8 inches of wall left. Use the blocking fabric to cover the remaining soil. Also, backfill the soil to the wall.

3. Are boulder retaining walls expensive?

Boulder retaining wall costs vary according to the size of the wall. The total price can be calculated based on the number of stones and material as well as labour hours. For material, you can opt for blocks of limestone, sandstone, dry stone, or keystone for your boulder wall.

The combined cost of labour and materials would approximately be $25 per square foot. The cost of each of these boulder stones is similar. The hourly charge of boulder wall construction with dry stones is around $65 per hour.
