      Construction opportunities double in NSW's renewable energy regions

      NSW renewable energy zones: where contractor demand is doubling

      The NSW energy transition has moved from announcements to earthworks, and the enquiry data is starting to show it. Project opportunities in regions hosting or feeding the state's Renewable Energy Zones have grown sharply over the past year, led by the Central West, where opportunities have more than doubled.

      For civil contractors, plant hire businesses and owner-operators across regional NSW, this is a different kind of pipeline to a city build. The work is spread across thousands of square kilometres, it runs for years, and the contractors who get on the list early tend to stay on it.

      Here's where the growth is, which zones are actually under construction, and what the work involves beyond the wind turbines.

      Where the growth is

      Marketplace data from iseekplant shows four regions running well ahead:

      • Central West up 104%. Opportunities have doubled in the region hosting Australia's first REZ.
      • Far West & Orana up 92%. The Dubbo and Dunedoo corridor, at the centre of the Central-West Orana build.
      • Hunter Valley up 73%. Both a REZ region in its own right and the logistics gateway for the zones further west.
      • Central Coast up 43%.

      Worth noting the pattern: the strongest growth is clustered around the zone that has actually started construction, plus the transport corridor feeding it. That's what a real build-out looks like in the data.

      Central-West Orana is the one turning dirt

      Australia's first declared REZ covers roughly 20,000 square kilometres centred on Dubbo and Dunedoo, and it's well past the planning stage.

      EnergyCo appointed ACEREZ, a consortium of ACCIONA, COBRA and Endeavour Energy, as network operator in April 2025, with construction starting that June. The scope is substantial:

      • 90km of 500kV overhead transmission lines plus around 150km of 330kV lines for generator connections, running from Elong Elong in the west to Barigan Creek in the east via an energy hub at Merotherie.
      • Energisation from 2028, with construction continuing through to 2030.
      • 4.5GW of initial network capacity, growing towards 6GW by 2038, and access rights already granted to 10 renewable energy and storage projects totalling around 7.15GW.
      • Up to $25 billion in expected private investment, supporting an annual average of roughly 1,850 direct jobs locally during construction.

      The first 500kV transmission tower went up earlier this year, a 70-metre structure assembled on the ground in 19 sections and craned into place. There will be a lot more of those.

      The five zones are at very different stages

      This is the bit worth being clear about, because "five REZs" can imply five active construction fronts. NSW has five zones Central-West Orana, New England, South West, Hunter-Central Coast and Illawarra, but they aren't moving at the same pace.

      • Central-West Orana is under construction now.
      • New England is next in the queue, with potential to unlock up to 8GW. Stage two of the Port to REZ road upgrade program is specifically aimed at opening access to it.
      • South West, planned around Hay, has a proposed capacity of about 2.5GW.
      • Hunter-Central Coast sits across the region already showing strong enquiry growth, and intersects the Hunter Transmission Project.
      • Illawarra is the earliest stage of all. The offshore wind area was declared in June 2024, but no feasibility licences have been granted.

      The work goes well beyond the towers

      A REZ build is a civil job before it's an energy job, and the supporting infrastructure is where most contractors will find their way in:

      • Bulk earthworks and pads: switching stations, energy hubs, laydown areas and turbine hardstands, with dozers, graders and rollers.
      • Access tracks and road upgrades: the Port to REZ program alone covers upgrades at 19 locations and six new pullover bays between the Port of Newcastle and Elong Elong, backed by $128.5 million and delivered by BMD Constructions.
      • Water carts and dust suppression: non-negotiable on unsealed access roads across working farmland.
      • Float and heavy haulage: oversize overmass loads for turbine blades, towers and transformers, plus prime movers and escorts.
      • Land clearing and trenching: easement establishment, cable routes and underground services.
      • Piling and concrete: tower footings and substation slabs.
      • Cranes: tower erection and heavy component lifts.
      • Traffic control and surveying: across long rural corridors and live highway intersections.

      Local capability counts here. Earthmoving in Dubbo, Newcastle and Tamworth is being drawn into work that would once have gone to metro contractors, simply because mobilisation distance is a real cost on projects this spread out.

      One thing to watch: coal timing keeps shifting

      The pitch for REZs has always been about replacing retiring coal. That timeline has moved.

      Origin announced in January 2026 that Eraring, Australia's largest power station, will now run until April 2029, rather than closing in August 2027. It's the second extension. Coal's share of NSW electricity has fallen from around 80% a decade ago to roughly half today, with four coal stations left after Liddell closed in 2023, but the replacement schedule remains fluid.

      For contractors, that cuts both ways. Delayed closures reduce the urgency on some replacement projects, while the transmission and storage work already contracted continues regardless. Watch the contracted work, not the political timeline.

      The capacity problem for regional contractors

      Regional businesses chasing REZ work face a specific squeeze: long travel, thin local labour, and enquiries arriving while the crew is two hours from the office.

      What to do in the next six months
