Brisbane Arena: What Woolloongabba's plan means for contractors

Brisbane Arena at Woolloongabba has reached the detailed-proposal stage, with two shortlisted consortiums competing to deliver the indoor venue and surrounding precinct. Site investigations are underway, giving Queensland contractors a project to watch as procurement progresses.

The proposed 17,000-seat arena is intended to be privately funded and is not required for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games but remains vital for Queensland's event management moving forward. For local operators, the useful questions are who wins the bid, when work packages emerge and how the build is staged.

What is planned for Brisbane Arena?

Brisbane Arena is planned for the former GoPrint site at Woolloongabba, alongside the Cross River Rail station. The wider Gabba Entertainment and Housing Precinct covers around nine hectares less than two kilometres from Brisbane's CBD.

The plan combines an indoor venue for concerts, sport and entertainment with housing, retail, hospitality and public spaces.

Where does Brisbane Arena bidding stand?

Two consortiums have progressed from a field of eight bids into the Request for Detailed Proposal stage. The government's project update, last updated in July 2026, identifies them as Ignite and Gather Brisbane.

      • Ignite, formerly Brisbane Entertainment Alliance: Capella Capital, Lendlease Construction and Development, AEG and Legends Global.
      • Gather Brisbane: Plenary Group, Live Nation and OVG.

What does the $2.5 billion estimate cover?

The roughly $2.5 billion figure is a planning estimate, not a confirmed construction contract value. The March 2025 review estimated $2.385 billion for the arena excluding associated precinct and transport infrastructure, or $2.562 billion with those works included.

The government's response accepted the former GoPrint site as the preferred arena location, while making cost, delivery model and timing subject to a transaction with the private sector.

Keep that qualification in mind when assessing the opportunity. A review estimate does not establish the value of available subcontract packages, the final scope or how much work will reach local suppliers.

What site work has started at Woolloongabba?

Geotechnical investigations have started, but they should not be confused with the main arena build. Drilling began in March 2026 to test ground conditions and inform foundation designs.

The government's March announcement targeted site preparation and enabling works from mid-2026 and main construction in the first half of 2027. Its July project update confirms site preparation is underway, including geotechnical drilling. The construction date remains a published target rather than proof of a main-works start.

If you provide geotechnical drilling, the investigation milestone is directly relevant. For other suppliers, it signals design preparation, not a confirmed order for your gear.

What work could follow for contractors and plant suppliers?

The arena and surrounding development will create opportunities across civil, structural and services work. The key categories include:

      • Earthworks: excavators for site establishment and foundation excavation, subject to the design.
      • Ground engineering: drill rigs where the foundation solution requires specialist drilling.
      • Structural construction: tower cranes where suitable for the selected lifting strategy.
      • Concrete placement: concrete pumping for foundations and structural elements.
      • Spoil and materials: tipper trucks for earthmoving and material deliveries.
      • Equipment mobilisation: float hire to move plant to and from site.

What Queensland suppliers should do next

Watch for the preferred-proponent announcement, a confirmed delivery program and published opportunities to register supplier interest. Those milestones will tell you more about potential work than another concept image.
