GOORING JIMBILA CONTRACTING (GJC)

BACKGROUND

  • Established in February (24) 2010 as trading Company for Joint Venture between Gelganyem Investments Pty Ltd and Doorn-Djil Yoordaning Mining and Construction.

 

  • Gelganyem Investments Pty Ltd represents and manages the commercial interests of the Gija and Miriwoong Traditional Owners of the Argyle Participation Agreement.

 

  • Doorn-Djil Yoordaning Mining and Construction is the Aboriginal contracting arm of Macmahon Contracting, founded as a stand-alone Business Unit of the Macmahon Indigenous Employment Strategy.

 

  • GJC went on to win a five year Contract valued at approximately $12.5million, to provide Infrastructure Maintenance Services to Argyle Diamonds.

 

  • Services included Infrastructure maintenance, grounds maintenance & Contractor co-ordination activities at various locations at Argyle Diamond Mine.

 

  • The GJC JV represented a new era in Aboriginal business development in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia.

 

  • Aims of GJC JV:

 

  1. To deliver a competitive and high quality service to clients while maximising opportunities for Aboriginal workers, their families and communities, by bridging the cultural gap between employers and communities;
  2. Investing to ensure a consistent supply of skilled, work-ready labour; and
  3. For the business to be run entirely by Aboriginal staff.

 

STAND-ALONE CONTRACTOR & PREFERRED SUPPLIER

 

  • 2013 Gelganyem Investments Pty Ltd separated from the JV and obtained Pre-Qualification status, establishing GJC as a stand-alone Contractor and preferred supplier to Argyle Diamonds Limited.

 

  • GJC retained the Infrastructure Maintenance Services (IMS) Contract which involves Civil Works and Dry and Wet Waste Management.

 

  • IMS are carried out to the Company’s network of roads and tracks which are both sealed and unsealed, waste disposal facilities, 2 permanent Village accommodation camps, several office buildings, portables, workshops, warehouses & yards, the process plant, mining equipment workshops, and the airport.

 

  • GJC now 99% Aboriginal staffed, exceeding its current local/Indigenous employment target.

 

ACHIEVEMENTS

To date, GJC has achieved the following:

  • Winner, Outstanding Contribution to Aboriginal Employment and Training – September 2011 - East Kimberley Aboriginal Achievement Awards;
  • Winner, East Kimberley Small Business Awards 2014 – Best Aboriginal Business; and
  • Finalist, WA Regional Small Business Awards 2014).

 

EXPANSION & COMMITTMENT

GJC is committed to expanding its capability to deliver a broader range of services to be able to provide further opportunities and benefits for its owners and the broader Aboriginal community. This includes working with other businesses in the East Kimberley Region to offer indigenous Contracting services in the civil and Government services sector.
